Elections

In elections, residents choose decision-makers for the municipal council, the Parliament and the European Parliament, and they also vote in presidential elections, regional elections and municipal citizens’ initiatives. Those of voting age are those who turn 18 at the latest on election day.

Who has the right to vote?

In national elections, all Finnish citizens of voting age are entitled to vote regardless of their place of residence.

In European Parliament elections, citizens of EU member states who have notified the local register office that they wish to be entitled to vote here are also entitled to vote.

In municipal elections and regional elections, only those whose municipality of residence is in Finland are entitled to vote. In addition to Finnish citizens, citizens of EU member states are entitled to vote. Other foreign nationals are entitled to vote if they have lived permanently in Finland for more than two years.

Where do people vote?

Everyone entitled to vote has the right to vote at any general advance voting place in Finland or abroad. On election day, a voter may only vote at the polling place that is entered in the voter register and is mentioned on the notification card sent to their home.

In 2012, the Joroinen municipal council decided that there is only one voting district in Joroinen. This means that on the actual election day, voting can only take place at the Sports Hall. When voting, you must prove your identity.
