Public transport and PALI
Good transport connections and well-functioning public transport are an important part of the services provided for residents.
The public transport services of the Municipality of Joroinen include the bus traffic that runs within the municipality and the surrounding area, as well as the demand-responsive service transport (PALI). Traffic safety work in the municipality is fundamental work that takes into account residents of all ages and different groups of road users.
Bus traffic
Within the area of the Municipality of Joroinen, buses run on the following routes:
- Varkaus – Kuvansi – Joroinen church village
- Varkaus – Maavesi – Kolma – Joroinen church village (on school days)
- Varkaus – Kuvansi – Tahkoranta – Joroinen church village (on school days)
- Kerisalo – Joroinen church village (on school days)
- Kaitainen – Joroinen church village (on school days)
Joroinen–Varkaus bus services
The operator of the Varkaus–Joroinen local traffic and the Varkaus local traffic is Soisalon Liikenne Oy.

Matkahuolto Routes and Tickets app
With the Matkahuolto Routes and Tickets app you can buy and pay for tickets for Varkaus city traffic and Varkaus–Joroinen local traffic. With the app, a passenger can search for route options from address to address and receive timetabled, map-based guidance, and can at the same time, if desired, buy tickets for an upcoming journey.
A mobile ticket is activated automatically according to the travel plan, or it can be activated earlier if desired. An activated mobile ticket is valid for 60 minutes. Tickets purchased with the app appear in the app on the Active tab, from where they are shown to the driver and can be checked if necessary.
The free Matkahuolto Routes and Tickets app can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play store and easily activated by email.
Kaitainen and Kerisalo bus services
The Kaitainen–Joroinen service is operated by Soisalon Liikenne Oy and the Kerisalo–Joroinen services by Tilausliikenne Linjakas Oy. The lines are operated on school days from 7 August 2024.

At the service points of the Municipality of Joroinen, bus travel cards are on sale at the library. With the travel cards you can travel on the bus services Kaitainen – Joroinen – Kaitainen and Kerisalo – Joroinen – Kerisalo. The price of a travel card is 43 € and the card is valid for 1 month from the time of purchase.
The free travel right for pensioners between 10.00 and 14.00 also applies to the services going to Kaitainen and Kerisalo. The bus card is available at the library by showing the pensioner’s card issued by Kela.

Service transport PALI
PALI traffic is demand-responsive service transport, in which the needs of elderly passengers and people with reduced mobility have been particularly taken into account. Anyone can order a PALI journey. Service transport is an intermediate form between traditional bus traffic and taxi traffic, and part of public transport open to all.

Bookings must be made the previous day between 8.00 and 15.30. Monday’s transports are booked the previous week.
The service vehicle operates from Monday to Friday. The service vehicle picks up from the yard when needed and assists customers, so there may be changes to routes and timetables. Part of the day is driven based on requests. In that case it is possible to run errands in the church village and nearby areas (e.g. Kerisalo, Kerisalonsaari, Joroisniemi, Tiemassaari or Varkaus). The transport fee is the same as a single bus ticket.
Evening services of the service transport
On 29 January 2024, the municipal board decided to discontinue the evening services of the service transport from the beginning of February 2024 due to the low number of users. The service transport continues unchanged in other respects.
