Area instructions and documents

Harmful invasive species

In Finland, the harmful invasive garden species include giant hogweed, large-leaved lupine, rugosa rose and Himalayan balsam. All of these also grow in Joroinen, and they have mainly been removed by mowing and weeding. Himalayan balsam has spread in certain afforested areas, and the only option for controlling the plants is chemical treatment.

Areas to be treated

  • the forest area between the old Highway 5, Mutalantie, Työkuja, Koulutie and Hotel Joronjälki
  • the forest area between Riihikuja, Ahokuja and Koskentie
  • the forest area between Urheilutie and the sports field, and the verge areas of the jogging track
  • the verge and forest areas of Sivutie and Alatie
  • the verge and forest areas of Viertotie
  • the forest area between Ylätie and Välitie
  • the municipal depot area, Asematie 6
  • the brushwood area of Iitosentie
  • the verge and forest areas of Kuvansintie

Eradication on private areas

A collection point has been set up at the municipal depot, Asematie 6, where residents can bring giant hogweed and Himalayan balsam they have weeded themselves on weekdays from 7.00 am to 2.30 pm. The weeding waste of these plants should not be taken with general garden waste to the Palviainen bio-terminal, due to the risk of spreading.

Reporting invasive species observations
