Private roads
In Joroinen there are about 300 km of private roads that fall within the scope of the municipality’s private road grants. In addition, there are hundreds of kilometres of smaller roads leading to holiday homes and forest roads.
It is possible to receive a grant from the municipality for the maintenance costs of private roads that are significant for year-round habitation. The amount of the grant is at most 50–70% of the calculated maintenance costs, but in any case no more than 80% of the actual costs.
In addition, the municipality may grant aid for the basic renovation of roads. The amount of the grant depends on the annual appropriation and the number of applicants. The grant is paid according to the actual costs.
State share of basic renovation grants increased
The state share of the basic renovation grants for private roads was increased from the beginning of 2023.
Annual maintenance grant
The annual maintenance grants for 2025 can be applied for by 1 Sept 2025.
Bulletin for applying for grants (pdf)
Private road grants are applied for through the Tievahti online service: app.tievahti.fi.
When a road maintenance association applies for a grant for the first time, the application must include an extract of the private road from the property data system, as well as a map on which the road and any permanent habitation are clearly marked.
The application period for basic renovations is ongoing, or for as long as appropriations are available.
You can read more about the Private Roads Act, which entered into force on 1 Jan 2019, and its effects on decision-making related to private roads in the National Land Survey’s bulletin (pdf).
